If you’re interested in reading something with a happy ending, then you’ve come to the wrong place.
A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket is exactly what the title suggests. This is indeed a tragedy but targeted towards children and young adults. Fans of tragedy will already find somethelves enjoying this tragic tale of the three new orphans: Sunny, Klaus and Violet Baudelaire. Readers that haven’t or aren’t used to tragedy, be forewarned - this novel simply does not have a happy beginning, middle or end. The brutality of their adoptive father; Count Olaf is a grim reminder to readers that the world is unfair, unjust and unhappy.
But perhaps this book will provide more than just pure agony and pain. Readers will be reminded that they are in a slightly better predicament than the three protagonists of this story. Once we’ve finished this novel, we will realize that our life is probably not as bad as we make it seem to be and we should not take our privileges for granted. Cherish your family, home and simple daily necessities because everything will be taken away behind these grim pages.
